Psychosocial Outcomes.

While recognizing how the religious connotations of the 12-step program have remained an obstacle for many potential participants and clinicians, Peteet (1993) examined the positive effects of the 12 steps in recovery from addictive behaviors. He points out that 12-step programs provide accessible group support and a clear ideology regarding addiction, and they support the individual's search for identity, integrity, inner life, and interdependence within a social, moral, and spiritual connection (Peteet, 1993). Active involvement in AA (e.g., regular meeting attendance) has also been associated with overall stress attenuation, increased spirituality, and increased contentment with life among studied subjects (Corrington, 1989). Purpose in life, self-actualization, and internal locus of control also have been reported to increase over the course of 12-step spiritual treatment for alco holism (Giannetti, 1987). Finally, Briggman and McQueen (1987) examined how non-Christian members of AA change since AA does not emphasize a religious relationship with Jesus Christ. They concluded that the alcoholics changed from an internal to an external locus of control regarding drinking behaviors. That is, alcoholics were more internal with respect to drinking at baseline but shifted to an external locus of control across treatment and successful follow-up.
